The Denman Museum & Archives draws its mandate from the constitution of the Denman Museum and Seniors Society. The Museum and Archives is a standing committee of the DSMS chaired by a director for Museum and Archives. The budget is allocated by the DSMS Board supplemented by earned revenues from M&A activities and project grants.
In October 2023 work has been done on the museum roof to repair the aging roof and address leaks which have endangered the collections. The museum wishes to thank the Government of Canada for partial funding of this project through Heritage Canada. The final bit of the work will be completed when weather permits.

Denman Seniors and Museum Society
The Denman Seniors and Museum Society has two purposes: to house a Museum, and provide a Denman island facility for community gatherings and recreational activities. DSMS is a registered non-profit under the BC Societies Act and was incorporated in 1980. The DSMS owns and administers the Denman Activity Centre, known as the Tess Truman Hall. The Loungeand full equipped kitchen is rented throughout the year for numerous social events and meetings. The DSMS also has a fully equipped gym available through a paid membership. The recreation hall is available for activities such as pickle ball, table tennis, and large community gatherings such as the Christmas Craft Fair.
History of the Museum
Doras and Jim Kirk
Origins of the Denman Island Museum. Doras and Jim Kirk, who began operating the Denman Island Post Office and General Store in 1950 were the original owners of what is now the Denman Island Museum collection. Theirs was a private collection of rocks, fossils and sea shells which they displayed in the General Store. Over time, they moved the collection to their home, building an extension in 1967 to house the collection. The collection was open to the public at no charge, and was gradually added to by other members of the community.
