Denman Votes “No” to Library – May 2024

May 2, 2024

The Denman Island Women’s Institute created the first Denman Island library in 1920, with
travelling library services and books located in a member’s home. This system continued to
provide library services until, in 1980 the collection was moved from Dora Drinkwater’s house
to a space in the renovated Community Hall. The current library is named after Dora and her
house was bought and renovated by the community. It is now the Art Centre. The vote “No”
incident occurred in 1935 when a Vancouver Island Regional Library system was proposed.
Adoption of that system would have required a tax on Property Owners of about $2 per year.
