In 1895 the Kawamuras established a very successful vegetable farm at the South end of Denman Island. Japanese labourers were also employed logging and constructing the railway grade for the Quarry in 1911. In 1923 Eikichi Kagetsu established a major logging enterprise across Baynes Sound at Fanny Bay. The Japanese families from Fanny Bay were removed to inland camps at the beginning of World War Two.
