Coal mining on Vancouver Island was the spur to early European settlement on Denman Island beginning with the Quadra P.O. in 1878. The Alpha, Flora, and Willamette were all carrying coal when they ran aground off Denman Island in the early 1900s. In 2010 a proposed coal mine behind Buckley Bay triggered a vigorous protest on Denman.
